Vol. 124 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cotton Quilts.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if any representations have been made to him, or to the Industrial Development Authority, as to the inadequacy of the definition of cotton quilts, under the existing tariff schedule, and the evasion of duty by the consignment of such goods under other definitions; and, if so, whether he proposes to take any action in this matter.

Representations of the nature referred to were received by me some time ago. The Government at that time decided, in view of the supply position generally, not to bring cotton quilts within the scope of existing duties for the present.

Is it a fact that an undertaking was given to a firm that if it began manufacturing quilts it would be protected?

I am afraid there is no truth in that statement.
