Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Report of Political Convention.

Mr. de Valera

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware that at a political convention attended by the Minister for External Affairs a resolution proposing to establish units of an illegal organisation all over the country was, according to newspaper reports of February 19th, discussed in private, whether he knows the decision arrived at, and whether he will inform the Dáil of the Government's attitude in regard to this proposal.

The Government have no responsibility for proposals which may be made at political conventions. However, in view of the suggestions contained in the Deputy's question, I have made inquiries, and I am in a position to state that the resolution referred to in the question was withdrawn and not discussed.

Mr. de Valera

May I ask whether the Taoiseach would not take occasion to advise and to warn young people who might be induced or tempted to join this illegal organisation that the inevitable end of the course on which they are embarking will be conflict with the forces of this State?

I think the attitude of this side of the House on that has been made abundantly clear, but I may say that I think the homily preached by the Leader of the Opposition does not arise on this particular instance, as inquiries clearly demonstrate. There was no question of people joining this particular organisation at all in connection with this matter, as ascertained by inquiries.

Mr. de Valera

May I ask the Taoiseach is he aware that there is a special drive at the present time taking place in the United States for funds for this organisation?

So far as this is concerned and the organisation referred to in this question, that does not arise, as I am informed from the inquiries I have made.

As I may not have an opportunity of making a personal statement, as I have to leave the House shortly, may I say——

By leave of the House. Do you want to speak now?

Before the Minister says anything, I would like to ask him a question so that he may answer it at the same time, in connection with the drive for funds in America. Can we get an undertaking from the Minister that his visit to the United States is not in connection with that drive? This is going on now. In the past he did collect for that organisation.

More sabotage from Deputy Boland.

What are you talking about?

You and Moscow.

It would be helpful if Deputies would keep silent for a minute. This is serious. This particular proposal was withdrawn, the proposer of the particular motion explaining that what they really meant was that they would like to see the F.C.A. strengthened and young Irishmen who had hitherto joined other organisations joining the F.C.A. That is a desirable development.

Mr. de Valera

I just want to say that I am asking these questions because of the seriousness of the matter that is involved. I am asking them in order that there may be no doubt in the public mind as to the attitude of the Government in these matters and I welcome anything that would be said to make the situation clear.

It is a bit late for you to say that.

There is no doubt in the public mind.

We are prepared to discuss Moscow and your associates, to have it out any time the Minister likes.

When the devil is sick, the devil a saint would be.

We will thrash that out some day.
