Vol. 124 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cullin Telephone Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs whether he is aware of the serious inconvenience caused to the residents of Cullin village, County Cork, due to the failure of his Department to have telephonic communication arranged with the local sub-post office in the area; and, if so, if he will proceed to have a public telephone erected immediately.

As I stated in reply to similar questions on the 28th February last, it is the intention of the Department to instal a telephone in every post office. As there are still about 700 post offices to be dealt with—most of them in remote areas—the work will have to be spread over a number of years. In order that the best progress may be made, the order in which call offices are installed is determined mainly on engineering considerations. Cullen is not one of the call offices included in the programme for the coming year and it is not, I regret, possible to say when a call office will be provided there.
