Vol. 124 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat and Grain Storage.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total storage capacity for grain at present available in the country, specifying the total storage capacity available for (a) milling wheat; (b) seed wheat, and (c) other grain.

A survey of the total grain storage capacity in the country is proceeding, but it will be some time before the survey is completed and up-to-date storage statistics available. The information in my Department indicates that the total grain storage capacity available is approximately 344,000 tons but it is not possible to state separately the capacity available for native wheat, seed wheat and other grain.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total storage capacity required to contain at any given date the total quantity of imported wheat and home-grown wheat necessary to meet one complete year's requirements, specifying the estimated proportion of such storage required for (a) milling wheat, and (b) seed wheat.

The storage capacity required to store 12 months' requirements of millable and seed wheat amounts to approximately 520,000 tons, of which 480,000 tons is applicable to millable wheat and 40,000 tons applicable to seed wheat.
