Vol. 125 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Partition.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether the Partition of Ireland was discussed by himself and President Truman during his recent interview with him.

I regret that it is not in accordance with recognised international usage to disclose the subject matter of discussions that take place at such interviews. I should like to add, however, that President Truman expressed, in no uncertain terms, the friendship of his Government and of the people of the United States for Ireland, and his desire for the closest link possible between the two countries.

Am I to take it from the Minister that I cannot get any information in this House as to whether Partition was, in fact, discussed? We have to ask a person in America.

I do not think that the Deputy's suggestion is quite fair. I am sure the Deputy must appreciate that international usage must be adhered to. It would be weakening the hand of myself and subsequent Ministers if discussions that took place were made public.
