asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the fact that medals and service certificates have been issued to Irish seamen who served during the emergency, they will receive the same preferential treatment in the filling of public appointments accorded to others who served in the Defence Forces during the same period.

Following the reply given to the Deputy's previous question on the 9th March, 1950, consideration was given by the Government to the possibility of having the concessions in question extended to men who had served in the mercantile marine during the emergency. It was decided that the concessions could not be so extended, but the matter will shortly come before the Government again for reconsideration.
