Vol. 125 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cahirciveen Electricity Station.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the urgent necessity for the establishment of a turf-fired electricity generating station at Cahirciveen, County Kerry, and if he will take steps to make the necessary arrangements at an early date.

I would refer the Deputy to the reply given in Dáil Éireann on 12th May, 1948, to a question on the subject of a generating station in South Kerry, and to which I have nothing to add.

Mr. Flynn

Is the Minister aware that the type of generating station that I refer to could be operated on a production basis of 25,000 tons per annum? If the Government are serious in their recent statements about developing industries in the Gaeltacht districts, will the Minister review this position with reference to my request for a generating station? Further, is he aware that I am putting this up as an alternative to the refusal of the Electricity Supply Board to extend their normal services from Killorglin and Killarney districts to Cahirciveen? I am putting this up as an alternative, seeing that we have the turf in that area—in Cahirciveen, Portmagee and Ballinskelligs.

Obviously, any time a matter of this kind is put up by a Deputy it will be looked into again. I am stating that without holding out any hopes for the Deputy.
