Dáil Éireann debate -
Wednesday, 2 May 1951

Vol. 125 No. 13

Financial Resolution No. 3—Customs and Excise. - Resolution No. 7—General.

I move:—

That it is expedient to amend the law relating to customs and inland revenue (including excise) and to make further provision in connection with finance.

I understand that the Deputies opposite desire that this debate should continue. I heard that complaint being made by Deputy Lemass in the course of his statement.

What Deputy Lemass said was that the usual procedure was not being carried out to-day.

I hope I can speak without interruption from the Deputy. What Deputy Lemass said was that a change was being made in the old-time procedure. The old-time procedure was that the debate ran over to the next day. He said that we had engineered this by bringing in the Budget on the eve of a Catholic Holyday so that there could be no debate. There can be a debate. The debate can go on now. If the Deputies opposite desire to continue the debate, they can do so. If they do not want to do that, then they should move to report progress because I cannot do it.

I move to report progress.

I thought so.

We will expose you to the public.

I want to have the position made clear.

I want you to run away openly.

Progress reported; Committee to sit again.
