Vol. 126 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Stamp Duties.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will indicate the date on which the 5 per cent. stamp duty imposed by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1947, will be reduced to 3 per cent. as provided by sub-section (6) of Section 6 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1950.

Under sub-section (6) of Section 6 of the Housing (Amendment) Act, 1950, the stamp duty on conveyances and leases was reduced from 5 per cent. to 1 per cent. in the case of houses qualifying for a grant under the main provisions of that section. This relief operates where the house is purchased by an Irish national and where the relevant document has endorsed on it a certificate under the seal of the Minister for Local Government that a grant under the section will be made to the purchaser when the house is occupied by him.

The general reduction in stamp duty from 5 per cent. to 3 per cent. provided for in this year's Finance Bill will come into operation on 1st August, 1951.
