Vol. 126 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Postal Facilities.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that outgoing letters are collected at 10.30 a.m. daily at Newcastle, Blarney, County Cork, and that this system is unsatisfactory to the residents in this district; and, if so, if he will have the matter investigated with a view to improving the service.

A later collection from the letter-box at Newcastle, Blarney, County Cork, could only be provided by diverting the mail car and incurring material additional expense which would not be justified.

Considering that the people in the Newcastle area who receive letters in the morning cannot post a reply until the following day, which means a delay of 48 hours, would it not be possible to have the mail car which calls at Greneagh, a few miles away, diverted via Newcastle?

The matter has been investigated very carefully. Only about three letters a day are posted in the box in question. The cost of re-routing the van is estimated to be about £50 a year. There is a night mail from Blarney, which is four miles away, at about 7.10 p.m.
