Vol. 126 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will indicate what fixed prices he intends to fix for wheat, oats and barley in the coming season; further, if he will indicate whether he will give a five-year minimum price guarantee.

Mr. Walsh

It is not proposed to control officially the price of oats or barley of the 1951 crop. The question of wheat prices is under examination and an announcement in this regard will be made at an early date.

Did the Minister not state in his concluding remarks on the Estimate on Tuesday that he hoped shortly to announce higher fixed prices for wheat, oats, barley and beet for the coming season?

Mr. Walsh

I stated in my closing remarks in the debate that it was the Fianna Fáil policy to give adequate prices to farmers for their produce.

I understood——

Mr. Walsh

If you understood, you understood wrong.

May I ask is it or is it not the case that the Minister stated in his concluding remarks that he hoped shortly to announce fixed prices for these commodities for the coming season and is not that in direct conflict with the answer he has just given?

£26 to the nigger and £16 to us—that is what you gave.

Is the policy going to be reversed every 24 hours?
