Vol. 126 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Valuation of Property.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the excessive valuation imposed on people who erected or repaired houses in South Kerry; and, if so, if he will have the matter re-examined at an early date with a view to providing a suitable adjustment to the persons concerned.

I am not aware that excessive valuations have been placed on houses erected or repaired in South Kerry; but in any event I should emphasise that I have no function in the matter. The Deputy, perhaps, is unaware that any person who is aggrieved at a valuation fixed on annual revision has a statutory right of appeal to the Commissioner of Valuation and from his decision, if still aggrieved, to the Circuit Court.

Is the Minister aware that an assurance was given here some time ago that amending legislation might be introduced to adjust this question of valuation with regard to new buildings particularly?

I do not recollect that any such assurance was given here. The only legislation which could adjust the many anomalies which have arisen in recent years by reason of the revaluations which have been requested by local authorities is one for the general revaluation of the country.
