Vol. 126 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf-Burning Engines.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is in a position to give any information to the Dáil as to the progress made by Córas Iompair Éireann in the development of turf-burning railway engines and whether he will urge Córas Iompair Éireann to press forward these experiments as a matter of urgency.

I am informed by Córas Iompair Éireann that some progress has been made in testing turf-burning with a static locomotive boiler but that, up to the present, their experiments have not progressed beyond this stage. Arrangements are now being made for applying the experience so obtained to a locomotive which will be tested in traffic. It will, however, take some time before these arrangements are completed.
