Vol. 127 No. 1

Questions— Written Answers. - Limerick-Ennis Road.

asked the Minister for Local Government if any survey has been made of the main Limerick-Ennis Road, or if any report or proposal or application for grant has been received from the responsible local authority for its improvement in the way of widening and removal of the numerous dangerous bends and corners which have been the cause of many serious accidents in recent years and if he is aware of the general unsuitability of this road for the increased and increasing volume of traffic to and from Shannon Airport; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

A survey of the road referred to was carried out in 1947 by the Clare County Council who inquired as to the amount of grant that would be made available for the improvement of the road. They were informed that the financial aspect of the work could not be considered pending the preparation of a complete estimate of the cost of the improvement including the erection of a new bridge at Bunratty. The county council did not proceed further with the matter. I am aware that portions of the road in question are in need of improvement but I would point out that the planning and execution of road works in County Clare is a matter for the Clare County Council.
