Vol. 127 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Generating Station for South Kerry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that there are thousands of acres of turbary available in Cahirciveen, Portmagee, Ballinskelligs, Mastergeehy and other areas in South Kerry and that the establishment of a turf generating station at Cahirciveen would be an economic proposition; and, if so, whether he is now in a position to make a definite announcement in the matter.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he intends to have a turf generating station established in South Kerry.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 64 and 65 together.

As I stated in reply to a question on this subject on the 18th July last, there are considerable practical difficulties associated with the proposal to establish a turf-fired electricity generating station in South Kerry. The question of the feasibility of utilising hand-won turf and turf produced by semi-automatic machines in generating stations is at present under consideration but the necessary investigations will take some time. The Deputies may be assured that in the general consideration of this matter the merits of such a project in South Kerry will receive careful attention.
