Vol. 127 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Request for Geological Survey in County Monaghan.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will recommend that a geological survey be carried out in the Laragh area of County Monaghan with a view to determining the extent of reputed deposits of coal and shale.

The Laragh district has already been fully surveyed and it is most improbable that a further survey, if undertaken, would add anything to the information which has already been recorded. This district comprises portion of what is known as the Millstone Grit Field and recent borings in that field some distance to the south of Laragh indicate that the coal is not of sufficient thickness to be commercially workable.
