Vol. 127 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Social Welfare Schemes.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he is aware that the unemployment benefits now paid to unemployed insured persons are inadequate to meet the increasing costs of food supplies and clothing; and, if so, if he will state whether it is proposed at an early date to review and increase the inadequate benefits at present being paid.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will consider introducing proposals for legislation for an early increase in widows' and orphans' pensions.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to reply to Questions Nos. 114 and 116 together.

The question of improving the benefits under social welfare schemes is at present under consideration in my Department, and I hope to be in a position to introduce proposals for legislation in the matter at an early date.
