Vol. 127 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Midleton Worsted Mills.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the employees of Midleton Worsted Mills are on half-time at present; and, if so, if he will ascertain the reason for this and take the necessary steps to have the employees put on full time immediately.

I have been informed that the Midleton Worsted Mills are at present working a five-day week instead of the normal five-and-a-half-day week. The reason for the short-time working is stated to be a falling off in orders, due to the abnormally heavy stocks still held by their customers. These heavy stocks are attributable partly to instability of wool prices, and partly to the stock-piling purchases made earlier this year. The drastic reduction which has since been made in the woollen and worsted import quota for the current period beginning 1st September, 1951, should help to rectify the position in due course.

Would the Minister ask his colleague, Deputy Corry, to go around and explain that to the Midleton people?

I am sure he will.
