Vol. 127 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mineral Survey.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether, in view of the world situation in respect of copper and sulphur, he will undertake an early survey of the Castletownbere area for minerals.

The Castletownbere area has been examined by the Geological Survey on a number of occasions and reports have been published. I have been considering the possibility of making fresh mineral surveys in a number of areas, including Castletownbere, where the mineral indications afford a prospect of profitable development but, though the consideration of the matter has reached an advanced stage, it is not yet possible to announce a decision.

In view of the acute nature of sulphur shortage, would the Minister undertake to expedite an investigation in regard to this area, as it is reputed to be a very likely source of large sulphur deposits?

A number of areas have been selected for examination by experts. Every relevant consideration will be taken into account in deciding upon the area.
