Vol. 127 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arts Council.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state when it is proposed to establish the arts council provided for under the Arts Act, the names of the persons appointed to the council and the terms, including remuneration, on which the director will be appointed.

No appointments of members of An Chomhairle Ealaíon have yet been made. The matter is under consideration, and in accordance with the provisions of the Arts Act, 1951, the appointments will be made before the end of the year. The terms on which the director will be appointed will be determined, in accordance with the provisions of the Act, on the occasion of his appointment.

Incidentally, I might remark that the Act itself provides that it is to come into operation during this calendar year. Since, however, no provision was made in the Estimates for any expenditure on An Chomhairle Ealaíon, it will be necessary to introduce an additional Estimate for the purpose.
