Vol. 127 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Servants and Politics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state if it is subversive of discipline for civil servants of various Departments to take a prominent part in politics prior to, during and subsequent to a general election and the disciplinary action which is taken in such cases.

A civil servant who identifies himself actively or publicly with political matters at any time contravenes an official rule. The disciplinary action taken for such a contravention varies with the gravity of the impropriety and is related to the individual circumstances, the standing of the official concerned and the degree of publicity.

I wonder would the Minister grant me an interview for a few minutes some time? While I do not want to victimise anybody, I certainly will not put up with a civil servant taking an active part in politics in my constituency.

I would always be glad to see the Deputy.
