Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballina Port.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that at one time a considerable tonnage of foodstuffs, fertilisers and general cargo was handled at the Port of Ballina; and, if so, if he will state what steps he proposes to take to restore the former volume of traffic, so as to reduce the cost of goods to the local consumers and also provide much-needed employment.

I had discussions recently about proposals which I regard favourably and which are likely to lead to the establishment of coastal shipping services by commercial interests. I do not doubt that, if effect is given to these proposals, the interests of Ballina will be taken into consideration. The shipment of particular cargoes is, of course, a matter for arrangement by the interests concerned.
