Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tax on Calendars.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state why a tax of 1/7 is now imposed on a calendar sent from Canada to subscribers in this country who have been receiving them duty free over a very long period.

Calendars of Canadian origin are liable to a minimum customs duty charge of 1/- in respect of each imported parcel or packet. If imported by letter post, Post Office charges would bring the total duty and charges to the figure of 1/7 mentioned by the Deputy.

With regard to the calendars stated to have been received duty free, unsolicited gift calendars addressed to individuals are admitted without payment of duty and it is possible that the calendars imported in other years were admitted under this concession. If the Deputy will furnish me with information as to the circumstances under which the calendars now charged were imported, I will have the matter looked into.
