Vol. 127 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Revaluation of West Cork Premises.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in view of the extremely high valuation of premises in congested areas, and in particular in West Cork and its islands, he will consider a revaluation of premises in these areas.

I am not aware that the valuations of premises in congested areas are extremely high. In any event, I have no function in the matter.

The Deputy may not know, perhaps, that any ratepayer in these areas who is aggrieved by reason of the valuation of his premises, may have it revised on sending a request therefor to the secretary of the county council and, should he be dissatisfied with the valuation fixed on such revision, has a statutory right of appeal to the Commissioner of Valuation, and from his decision to the Circuit Court. I am advised there is no power under the existing law to carry out a general revaluation in any rating area other than a county borough.

The obvious implication of my question is to inquire if the Minister will consider, in view of the fact that the complete Valuation Act in this country is out of date, the general question of revaluation for the whole country?

I think the Deputy ought to address that question to his immediate leaders, who prevented in 1938 a revaluation measure.

I am interested in the present-day business, and I want to know if the Minister will discharge that responsibility?

I am merely referring the Deputy to his fossilised leaders.

I am asking the Minister to discharge his duty in the national interest, but he is acting the Rathmines rowdy as usual.
