Vol. 127 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Land Acquisition and Division.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring Kilworth Camp for division among the local uneconomic holders and the descendants of the people who had to hand over arable land compulsorily to the British Government; and, if so, with what result.

The lands in question are the property of the State and are required by the Minister for Defence for military purposes. This being so, they cannot be acquired by the Land Commission.

Can the Minister state what progress is being made to enable the Land Commission to take over certain State lands which are a liability and a burden on the Department which owns them?

That is not my responsibility.

That matter does not arise within this question.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring and dividing the De La Poer Monsell estate, Tervoe, County Limerick; and, if so, what stage the proceedings have reached.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the Sankey estate, Cooper Hill, Tervoe, County Limerick; and, if so, what stage the proceedings have reached.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle I will take together Questions Nos. 17 and 18.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of these estates but they are having inquiries made.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state when it is proposed to divide the lands on the Weldon estate, Kilmaroney, Athy, in County Laoighis and County Kildare, and if any portion of the lands will be allotted during the present year.

As the proceedings for the acquisition of this estate have not been completed, it is not possible to state whether or when the lands will be allotted. In any event it is unlikely that they could be alloted during the present year.

asked the Minister for Lands whether the Land Commission have considered the propriety of acquiring the lands of Mr. Dennis Costello, situate at Cuilkagh, Menlough, Ballinasloe, County Galway, for distribution and subdivision among suitable allottees; and if the Land Commission have already taken steps in this regard, if he will indicate the present position.

The Land Commission have no proceedings for the acquisition of these lands, but enquiries are being made in the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the estate of Lord Oranmore and Browne at Castlemagarrett, Claremorris, County Mayo, is now being offered for sale; and whether, in view of the acute congestion existing in Mayo, the Land Commission are now prepared to acquire these lands.

The Land Commission are not aware that these lands are for sale, but they will have inquiries made.

Would the Minister direct the Forestry Division's attention to the same subject?

That is a separate question.

I do not mean it to be a question. I am merely making a request of the Minister.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware of the acute congestion existing in Lecanvey, Westport, County Mayo; if he is further aware that a farm formerly owned by the late Mr. Austin Mortimer, Lecanvey, was recently purchased by a Mr. Bernard Kelly and that the latter has now offered this farm to the Land Commission; and if the Land Commission will accordingly purchase this farm for the relief of local congests.

I am aware of the position as indicated in the first and second parts of the question.

The Land Commission propose to have the lands inspected, but have not yet taken any decision as to acquisition.
