Vol. 127 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - British Government Securities.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the Government Departments and agencies which hold British Government securities and the amount held on the 31st March last by each such Government Department or agency.

The total nominal value of British Government securities held by Government Departments, the courts of justice and other agencies on 31st March, 1951, was, as I informed the Deputy on 7th instant, £56,751,000. The holdings of the individual Departments etc., are as follows:—

DEPARTMENT OF FINANCE

£

(a) for Post Office Savings Bank

36,973,390

(b) for Social Insurance Funds

5,408,376

(c) for other accounts

8,610,876

Total

£50,992,642

Supreme Court and High Court of Justice

3,228,546

Circuit Court

6,631

Irish Land Commission

2,000,912

Commissioners of Charitable Donations and Bequests

346,323

Public Trustee

167,818

Department of Education

8,575

Grand Total

£56,751,447

May I take it that most of this money is invested in long-term securities?

I do not think that the Deputy may assume anything of the sort.

Will the Minister indicate what proportion of these funds is invested in short-term loans to the British Government?

I should require notice of that question.
