Vol. 127 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Bacon Pigs.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the practice adopted by bacon curers of reducing the price of bacon pigs when supplies improve is militating against the expansion of the pig-producing industry; and, if so, if he will advise curers that they are adopting a shortsighted policy.

Mr. Walsh

I am aware that reductions in the price of pigs, to whatever cause they are due, adversely affect expansion of the pig industry unless producers' costs also fall. I took the opportunity some time ago at a meeting with representatives of the bacon curers to emphasise this point.

Would the Minister consider it expedient to add that in no circumstances shall the price of pigs fall below 220/- per cwt. dead weight for the next five years?

Mr. Walsh

I do not know. Certainly, we will not do as you did last year.

Is it not so, as adopted by the last Government?

Mr. Walsh

The price of pigs has fallen.

It cannot fall below 220/- for the next five years. Is not that so?

Mr. Walsh

We certainly do not want it to fall.

Has not the Government given the assurance for five years?

Mr. Walsh

You gave the assurance.

Does the present Government confirm it?

Mr. Walsh

We hope it will not go below 240/-.

You do adopt the minimum of 220/-?

Mr. Walsh

It is very easy to adopt that minimum.

Good, but you do adopt it?

Mr. Walsh

Yes.
