Vol. 128 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reduction of Export Dues.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware (1) that the Cork Harbour Commissioners, in response to letters from his Department and the Department of Agriculture, reduced the export dues on eggs, poultry, rabbits, etc.; (2) that they have now been informed by letter from the Cork Warehousing, Cold Storage and Pure Ice Company, Limited, that they applied to the City of Cork Steam Packet Company, Limited, for the benefit of 6/9 per ton reduction in harbour dues, recently made by the commissioners, and were informed that it could not be granted as it had been brought before the Irish and English Traffic Conference, who decided against giving the exporters the benefit of the reduction; and, if so, whether he will state what steps he will take to see that this reduction in dues will go to the benefit of the trade as intended by the commissioners.

I am aware that the Cork Harbour Commissioners in October, 1951, reduced the harbour dues on export of eggs by 2/7½ per ton and on exports of poultry by 6/9 per ton. I regret that in the time available it has not been possible for me to ascertain what reduction, if any, was made in the dues on exports or rabbits or other goods.

I have made inquiries from the shipping company in this matter. I am informed that the benefit of the reduced harbour dues at Cork is being given in the "port to port" charges and in the through combined rail-sea charges if the goods are railed by merchandise train service. The shipping company informed me that they are already in communication with the other interested carrying companies on the question of a reduction in the through combined rail-sea passenger train service. I will keep in touch with the shipping company to keep myself informed as to developments.
