Vol. 128 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comic Paper Imports.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that certain comic papers which are imported into this country, especially comic papers printed in America, contain pictures which are most unsuitable for juvenile readers and if he will indicate what steps he proposes to take to have those papers properly censored.

I am aware that the view has been expressed that some of the "comic" papers imported to this country are unsuitable for children, but I should like to point out that the responsibility to see that children are not permitted to read books or periodicals unsuitable for them rests primarily on the parents. Any person who is of opinion that a particular periodical is usually or frequently indecent or obscene is entitled to make a complaint in the prescribed manner to the Censorship of Publications Board, and the board would, of course, consider any such complaint on its merits. I have no functions in the matter.
