Vol. 128 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soap Workers.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that workers in the soap industry are threatened with unemployment or short time owing to the large stocks of imported soaps held in the country at present; and, if so, if he will indicate what action he proposes taking in the matter.

I have been informed that some unemployment has developed amongst workers in the soap industry which, I hope, will be temporary. This cannot be attributed to the imports of soap, which represent only a small fraction of the total consumption. Imported soaps are liable to a duty of 75 per cent. (full). 50 per cent. (preferential).
