Vol. 128 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fishing in Kenmare.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that (1) a demand has been made by the Old I.R.A. Comrades Association, Kenmare, for an inquiry into the prohibition of salmon drift nets in Kenmare Bay by virtue of a by-law passed in 1913 by the then existing board of conservators for the area, constituted mostly of absentee landlords; (2) the by-law is a penal code against the fishermen of Kenmare Bay and is depriving at least 50 young fishermen from earning a livelihood at home and (3) of the four inshore fisheries in Kenmare three are owned by non-Irish nationals living outside the country; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take in the matter.

I have received a number of representations in recent months regarding the present prohibition on the use of drift nets for the capture of salmon in Kenmare Bay. I have had these representations under consideration but can only say that the position is as indicated in reply given to Deputy John Flynn on the 24th May, 1950, to a similar question.
