Vol. 129 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Strike at County Cork School.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the situation existing at Ballymakeera National School, County Cork, where parents resorted to strike action in not sending their children to school until such time as the insanitary conditions obtaining there were rectified; and, if so, whether he will state what steps have been taken to cope with the situation.

I assume that the schools referred to in the Deputy's question is Ballyvourney National School, Macroom, County Cork, from which parents withdrew their children for a short period owing to the unsatisfactory condition of the premises.

A scheme for the improvement of the schools and the provision of water-flushed sanitation has been prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works, and when agreement is reached with the manager as regards the local contribution to be provided towards the cost, a grant-in-aid will be sanctioned by the Department. Every effort will be made with a view to having the remaining preliminary arrangements completed as soon as possible.
