Vol. 129 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf—Private Producers.

The following question was on the Order Paper in the name of Deputy O. Flanagan:—

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if, in view of the need for the maximum production of turf, he will give an assurance to private producers that there will be a ready market for all turf produced during the coming season.

Question No. 1 is postponed.

I am proposing to answer Questions Nos. 1 and 2 together, anyway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what steps are being, or will be, taken to induce producers of hand-won turf to engage to the fullest extent in its production during the coming turf-cutting season.

It is proposed to assist producers of hand-won turf by continuing the provision for bog road and drainage works, and by maintaining the turf marketing and publicity section of Bord na Móna which has been of very material assistance to private producers in the disposal of their turf.

The unavoidably high cost of coal provides an assurance of a ready market for all good quality turf offered at a reasonable price.
