Vol. 129 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Labour Disputes.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he can hold out any hope of an early settlement in the hotels and Córas Iompair Éireann electricians' disputes, and if he will state if his Department is taking steps to bring both disputes or either of them to an end through further arbitration or negotiation.

The absence of a settlement in these two strikes does not arise from lack of effort on the part of the Labour Court or its conciliation officers, whose services are still available to the parties to the dispute.

Mr. Byrne

In view of the fact that efforts up to now to settle these disputes have been a failure, would the Minister not think that it is time for him to intercede personally in the matter? Having regard to the respect which both sides have for the Minister and his ability to handle these things as he did in the past, would the Minister endeavour to make a personal intercession?

So far as I know the difficulty in arriving at a settlement in these two cases is not due to any impediment as regards the meeting of the parties. It is due to the fact that agreement has not been made. If the Deputy has any suggestion on which another conference might be convened I shall be very glad to hear it from him and to communicate it to the parties concerned.
