Vol. 129 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Imports.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the average annual imports of wheat in cwts. (omitting hundreds) in the seven-year period 1939-1945 inclusive, and in the six-year period 1946-1951 inclusive.

The average annual imports of wheat in cwts. (omitting hundreds) in the seven-year period 1939—1945 inclusive were 4,252,000 cwts., and in the six-year period 1946—1951 inclusive were 3,401,000 cwts.

So that there were 800,000 cwts. per annum less in that period than in the following period?

The Deputy would be very unwise to draw any conclusions of that kind from these figures —the average figures.

Let those who run read.

For example, the imports of wheat in 1951 were 5,811,667 cwts. and in 1947 the figure was 2,251,595 cwts.
