Vol. 129 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Corporation Land.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will indicate the area of land owned by the Cork Corporation at Mayfield, Cork, the number of sites which have been let and the number which are to be let, the date on which the land was acquired and why more sites were not available for building as this land is within the county borough.

According to information furnished by the local authority, the Cork Corporation own a total of 71 acres of land at Mayfield, acquired in the years 1931 and 1933, of which sites for 293 houses have been leased to private persons, 16 acres of land have been allocated for playgrounds and sites for a further 50 houses will be leased to private persons. I have also been informed that portions of the land are unsuitable for building purposes and that the 50 sites shortly to be advertised will substantially complete the housing development proposed in this area.

Is the Minister aware that when applicants went for sites in that area three weeks ago they were informed that the maps were now being drawn for the sites? Does the Minister consider that satisfactory after 20 years?

I suggest that these are all matters suitable to be raised by a member of the corporation at a meeting of that body.

Arising out of that reply, they have been repeatedly raised at the corporation meeting without any satisfaction and that is the reason they are raised here.

Those who raised them cannot be congratulated on the success they have obtained.

Hear, hear! That put Deputy McGrath in his box.

I did not pass the Cork City Management Act.
