Vol. 130 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment of Male Nurses.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has received from the Waterford Board of Public Assistance a proposal, requiring his sanction, to employ male nurses in certain wards of hospitals under the control of the board; and, if so, if he will indicate whether such proposals will be applied in general throughout the country.

I have not received the proposal referred to by the Deputy. The county manager requested my observations on a resolution passed by the Waterford Board of Assistance that a scheme for the training of male nurses be adopted by the board and that a training school be established in the county hospital where selected candidates for training as probationary male nurses will be trained. The resolution requested my consent to the establishment of this training school.

I have informed the county manager that recognition of the Waterford County Hospital as a nursing training school is a matter for An Bord Altranais and I have advised him to communicate with that body.
