Vol. 130 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Amendment of Harbours Act.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Harbours Act, 1946, in order to provide specifically for a more adequate representation on the Cork Harbour Board of the interests representing Cobh Harbour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will introduce proposals for legislation to amend the Harbours Act, 1946, in order to provide specifically for the representation on the Cork Harbour Board of representatives of agricultural interests so as to ensure that exorbitant rates will not be charged on imported fertilisers and other agricultural commodities.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 15 and 16 together.

The constitution of the Cork Harbour Board is on the same basis as that of the other principal harbours listed in Part I of the First Schedule to the Harbours Act, 1946. The local authority representation on the Cork Board includes a member appointed by the Cobh Urban District Council.

As I indicated in reply to a previous question from the Deputy on 26th March, the basis of representation is designed to secure efficient harbour administration as well as the provision of adequate portal facilities for all classes of traffic and for all users of the port.

The introduction of proposals to amend the Harbours Act, 1946 is not in contemplation.
