Vol. 130 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost-of-Living Index.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the estimated rise in the cost-of-living index (food) as a result of the withdrawal of the food subsidies as announced in the Budget.

It is estimated that the rise in the cost-of-living index for food, following on the withdrawal of the food subsidies announced in the Budget, would amount to 10.2 points.

Is that on the basis of the present index or the old index?

The present one.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say if a calculation has been made on the basis of the old index?

That was not asked for.

The present index, which was 109 in mid-February, would be raised to 119.

I appreciate that, but I understand it is customary to give the old index as well as the new index because some civil servants who were transferred have their salaries and emoluments calculated on the basis of the old index.

I have not heard it like that.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state what effect, if any, the moneys voted away under the secret agreement of 1925 would have in the present-day cost of living if they had been retained for the benefit of the Irish people instead of being handed over to England?
