Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Employees.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total number of civil servants in State and local authority employment in the years 1939, 1945, 1947, 1949, 1950 and 1951.

The information requested by the Deputy is in the form of a tabular statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated with the Official Report.

The statement is as follows:—

The figures given above do not include (a) persons employed on relief schemes, (b) persons employed on a fee basis and (c) artisans, labourers, etc., employed on schemes or works of a temporary nature (other than relief schemes), who are not regarded as civil servants.

The number of civil servants who were seconded to local authorities during the years shown is as follows: 1939, 4; 1945, 7; 1947, 7; 1949, 4; 1950, 3; 1951, 3. These were the only civil servants in local authority employment.
