Vol. 131 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chick Supplies.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that vouchers issued to poultry keepers under the scheme for the supply of chicks in Gaeltacht areas are being returned by distributors on the grounds that the supply of such chicks will not meet the demand; and, if so, what steps he proposes to take to increase the supply.

Mr. Walsh

I am aware that a number of such vouchers have been returned by hatcheries in County Donegal with an intimation that they are unable to meet the increased demand for chicks. These vouchers are, however, negotiable at 16 hatcheries, over half of which are located outside County Donegal, and a list of these hatcheries was sent to each holder of a voucher. Some hatcheries on this list have as yet received very few of the vouchers and voucher holders who are unable to obtain their chicks from local hatcheries should get into touch with other hatcheries on the list or communicate with my Department. In order to facilitate voucher holders in securing chicks I have also extended the period of supply up to the 31st May.
