Vol. 131 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of Lands by Aliens.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) the number of acres of land purchased by persons who were living outside this country in each of the years 1949, 1950 and 1951, and (b) the value of land so purchased during those years.

From the information available, it is not possible to distinguish purchases of land by persons who were living outside this country in each of the years 1949, 1950 and 1951 from purchases of land by persons resident here during those years. The Deputy may, however, have in mind those cases in which the 25 per cent. stamp duty imposed by the Finance (No. 2) Act, 1947, was paid in the years 1949, 1950 and 1951, and, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the information available in regard to such cases.

Following is the statement:—

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that the wise boys have always converted themselves into limited liability companies to transfer these properties by the transfer of shares and thus avoid the tax?

That is a separate question.

Does it not invalidate the figures which it is proposed to print in the Official Report?
