Vol. 131 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Transport.

asked the Minister for Education if he will arrange to have transport provided for 13 children living at Aghaglinny, Ballyvaughan, to the nearest school, which is 5½ miles away.

State grants in aid of transport services for the conveyance of children to school may be made in cases where the average daily number conveyed is normally not less than ten. In order to be eligible for conveyance to school by a transport service a child should be between the ages of six and ten years and reside at least two miles from the nearest school, or be between the ages of ten and 14 years and reside not less than three miles from the nearest school.

According to particulars furnished to the Department there are nine children residing in the Aghaglinny area attending Ballyvaughan school but only five of these would be eligible for inclusion in a transport scheme.

As the necessary conditions in regard to the maintenance of the requisite minimum average to be conveyed are not fulfilled, I regret that a grant in aid of a transport service from Aghaglinny to Ballyvaughan National School could not be made.
