Vol. 132 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Abbey Slip Improvement.

asked the Minister for Agriculture when it is hoped to do something to improve the Abbey slip at Bantry, to help Whiddy islanders to land cattle and goods.

I am arranging to obtain an up-to-date report as to the position. The actual carrying out of such works would not, however, be a matter for my Department, whose functions in this regard are purely advisory.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary say whether his Department could not make available portion of the grant in view of the fact that the slip could be made available for the landing of cattle and also in connection with the delivery of cream from the island to the mainland for transportation?

I have to inform the Deputy that it is not a matter for the Fisheries Branch. The purpose of the question is indicated by the Deputy himself, that it is in connection with the landing of cattle and goods. The Special Employment Schemes Office carries out works where they are suitable.

May I tell the Parliamentary Secretary that the question was put down to the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance but, apparently, someone thought that it would be more appropriate if it went to you?

I think the Deputy is as well aware as I am that a number of authorities deal with these questions.

All that I am hoping is that one of them will deal with it.
