Vol. 132 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Radio Éireann Broadcasts.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state what progress has been made to eliminate the constant gross interference that Radio Éireann broadcasts invariably suffer.

There is interference from time to time with the transmissions from Athlone as well as with those from Dublin and Cork.

Unfortunately the broadcasting wavebands in Europe are very congested owing to the number of stations operating on them and, as will be appreciated, conditions otherwise in regard to radio are abnormal because of the general international situation. We make representations to administrations concerned whenever we trace interference to particular foreign stations. We have succeeded in keeping down the level of interference but in the existing situation we cannot hope to escape it entirely.
