Vol. 133 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Knitted Fabrics Industry.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state how many people are employed in the manufacture of wool jersey (knitted) fabrics, and how many people are employed in the conversion of such fabrics into ready-made wear.

Particulars are available only for the total employment by firms which make wool jersey (knitted) fabrics, but these firms usually make other goods and it is not possible to distinguish separately the number of workers who are engaged in the manufacture of knitted fabrics. The number of persons employed by firms engaged in the manufacture of wool jersey (knitted) fabric was 2,053 at mid-December, 1951 and 2,004 at mid-March, 1952.

As to the second part of the Deputy's question, there are clothing factories other than hosiery factories which purchase but do not manufacture wool knitted fabrics, but the employment on the making-up of the fabrics by such factories is only a small fraction of their total employment.
