Vol. 133 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Control of Tea Imports.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will release the tea trade from import control when existing stocks in the hands of Tea Importers, Limited, are liquidated, in view of discriminatory restrictions imposed by the Government of India on tea purchased by Ireland in Calcutta.

Mr. Lynch

I have no official information concerning the imposition by the Government of India of discriminatory restrictions on tea purchased by Ireland in Calcutta. The control on the import of tea was applied in February, 1950, to secure that imports on a commercial scale would be restricted to Tea Importers, Limited, and I do not consider it should be removed at this stage.
