Vol. 133 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Regrading of Waterford Railwaymen.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that a recent application made to the joint industrial council for rail workers for the regrading upwards from B to A classification of Waterford Station was refused; and, if so, if he will take steps to have this matter reinvestigated with a view to having this injustice to the rail workers employed at Waterford remedied, as they have to deal with an increasing volume of rail traffic and are paid at a lower rate than those employed in other cities in Ireland.

Under the provisions of Section 55 of the Railways Act, 1924, and Section 46 of the Transport Act, 1950, the rates of pay and other conditions of service of railway employees of Córas Iompair Éireann are required to be regulated in accordance with agreements made between the trade unions representative of the employees and the board. The matter to which the question refers is, accordingly, not one in which I have any statutory function.

Has the Minister power to make a recommendation for a rehearing?

I do not know what the rules of this organisation are, but if they permit of a rehearing I presume it is open to the trade unions concerned to avail of it.
