Vol. 134 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Beara Peninsula.

asked the Taoiseach if, in view of the isolated nature and acuteness of the economic problem of the Beara peninsula, its rapidly falling marriage and birth rates and the increasing emigration from the area, the inter-departmental committee established to advise and assist the Parliamentary Secretary to the Government has any proposals under consideration to develop industries in this area and, in view of the poor nature of the land, to have a revaluation scheme commenced.

The interdepartmental committee set up to advise and assist the Parliamentary Secretary to the Government has not had under consideration any proposals to develop industries in the Beara peninsula. Proposals in relation to new industries in the congested areas —of which the Beara peninsula forms part—are in the ordinary way submitted to An Forás Tionscal, the body appointed by the Minister for Industry and Commerce in accordance with the provisions of the Undeveloped Areas Act, 1952. I have no functions in respect of revaluation and any question on this matter should be addressed to the Minister for Finance.
