Vol. 134 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Pensioners.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Finance if he has received a memorandum from the association of civil service pensioners requesting consideration of their claim for increased pensions in order to meet the increase in the cost of living due to the imposition of taxes in the Budget of 1952; and, if so, if he will have the grievances complained of remedied.

I have received the memorandum referred to. As I indicated in reply to a parliamentary question on the 22nd October, I can hold out no hope of introducing legislation to increase the pensions of retired public officials having regard to the heavy State expenditure which such legislation would involve.
